Here are the details:
It was not the higher-ups in the John Kerry campaign who slashed the tires of 25 G-O-P vehicles on the November Election Day in 2004 in Milwaukee. That's what national Democratic operative Myesha Ward said yesterday at the trial of five Wisconsin workers charged in the vandalism. Ward said a few of her operatives did think about decorating the G-O-P headquarters with Kerry-Edwards signs and bumper stickers. But they scrapped that idea after they saw security guards swarming the place the night before the election. Ward said she was also surprised to see all the vehicles the G-O-P rented. The Republicans were planning to use them to give rides to voters the next day, but Ward says she doesn't see that strategy from the G-O-P very often. Prosecutors contend the five Wisconsin staffers acted on their own to vandalize the vehicles -- and they tried to hammer that point home as Ward and national consultant Opel Simmons were being questioned. Defense lawyers claimed it was folks like Simmons who committed what's now known as Operation Elephant Takeover. Ward said that was just a slogan at first -- before it became synonymous with the vandalism. The trial enters its fifth day today.

In Wisconsin, it's against the law for a company to punish you or discriminate against you, just because you smoke or pig-out on your own time. But state officials are getting more complaints about that kind of thing, as companies try to keep their health costs down. It was almost a year ago when four workers in neighboring Michigan got fired because they smoked off the job. Wisconsin has had a law since 1992 against employment discrimination for smokers -- and the state expanded that later to include all types of bad lifestyle choices. LeAnne Ware of the state's Equal Rights Division says she's hearing more complaints about mandatory-type wellness programs, in which employers off lower insurance premiums for joining certain health groups. Insurance broker Andrew Serio of Milwaukee says Wisconsin firms generally use positive incentives to convince employees to eat better, or lay off the cigarettes-and-booze. But if that doesn't work, he says companies use the stick approach. He says more firms will likely jack up health premiums for smokers, or maybe stop offering coverage to them. But Serio says companies that only hire perfect people may end up shooting themselves in the foot. In many fields, a shortage of skilled workers makes it an employee's market. He says we care as much about health insurance these days as we do about salaries -- and policies that intrude into private lives have a tendency of scaring good employees away.

Police in Madison say none of the four suspicious objects found near the State Capitol on Wednesday turned out to be bombs. But still, a 51-year-old homeless man was arrested for allegedly placing a suspicious-looking device on a mailbox. In the other incidents, someone apparently dropped small items down man-holes. Authorities pounced on those incidents, because three pipe bombs had been placed in a downtown Madison parking ramp in November and December -- and officers were still not sure who did that. The Dane County Bomb Squad helped evaluate the items found on Wednesday. Authorities say the man arrested for the mailbox planting was not the same one responsible for the other incidents -- including the parking ramp bomb placements.

Milwaukee Police have arrested a 51-year-old woman who allegedly gave cocaine to a 10-month-old girl she was caring for. The girl's mother is incarcerated. She notified authorities after learning that her daughter's care-giver served up the illegal drug -- apparently to help the youngster sleep. Child welfare workers removed the girl from the care-giver's home, and her case has been referred to prosecutors for possible charges.

Here are the details:
Former state Assembly Majority Leader Steve Foti may have to testify against a long-time friend to avoid a long sentence for corruption. The Republican from Oconomowoc will appear in court this afternoon. Media reports say he'll plead guilty to a reduced misdemeanor ethics violation -- with a possible order to testify against former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen of Waukesha. In exchange, Foti would get 30 days of confinement, two years of probation, a-thousand-dollar fine, and an order to pay restitution. Foti is now charged with felony misconduct. Authorities say he, a former aide, and Republicans Jensen and Bonnie Ladwig used their State Capitol offices to help run election campaigns designed to keep the G-O-P in control of the house. Ladwig has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge, and will be sentenced in March. Jensen and ex-Foti aide Sherry Schultz are slated for trials February 21st. Jensen's lawyer says Foti's testimony would help his client, and not hurt him. Jensen has said he did nothing different than Democrats in power before him. And to prove it, his lawyer has introduced as evidence parts of a book called "The Art of Legislative Politics." In it, former Democratic Assembly Speaker Tom Loftus said it was part of a speaker's obligation to keep his-or-her party in power. Meanwhile, prosecutor Brian Blanchard has asked another judge to clarify his sentence for former Senate Democrat Brian Burke -- who started serving his six-month jail sentence in his Milwaukee home last week. Blanchard wants the judge to confirm that Burke should have been placed behind bars.

Wisconsin senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold say they're still un-decided on whether to confirm U-S Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. The federal appeals judge completed four days of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. The panel's vote could come next week, and activists on both sides expect it to be 10-to-8 in favor -- with Kohl and Feingold joining the other Democrats in voting no. Both Wisconsin senators did support President Bush's first choice of John Roberts to the nation's highest court. But Kohl and Feingold both say they still have un-answered questions about Alito. Kohl said he could not get a handle on Alito's judicial philosophy -- and not just on abortion. He said the judge was too cautious in commenting on other key issues like civil rights and job discrimination. Feingold was looking for stronger comments on how Alito feels about limiting presidential powers, quote, "when a president is acting in conflict against the will and intent of Congress." That referred to Bush's monitoring of Americans' phone calls and e-mails when terrorist activity is suspected.
-1/13-
Truck driver Michael Kozlowski is due in court January 31st, after being charged with 25 criminal counts yesterday in the October crash that killed the Chippewa Falls High School band director and four others. Authorities said the 23-year-old Kozlowski was drinking at a party in his home state of Indiana less than a day before he fell asleep on Interstate-94 near Osseo. Soon after that, his rig jack-knifed in front of a bus carrying home band members from a state competition in Whitewater. The resulting crash killed five -- including the bus driver -- and injured 29 others. Kozlowski was driving produce to the Twin Cities at the time. He claimed he was pulling over to urinate when his rig lost control, but he admitted it was in the wrong gear. His charges include five felony counts of negligent homicide, 11 felony counts of reckless driving causing great bodily injury, and nine misdemeanor counts of reckless driving causing lesser injuries. School Superintendent Michael Schoch says his district is moving forward from the tragedy, and has made good progress in dealing with all the trauma over the last three months. A Rotary Club in Chippewa Falls honored the bus driver, Paul Rasmus, by naming its annual award after him for the area's most outstanding bus driver.

It got warm enough yesterday to resume a search for a southeast Wisconsin man who might have drowned in the Mississippi River. 24-year-old Matthew Kruziki (croo-zick'-ee) of Hartland has been missing since Christmas Eve, when he was last seen leaving a tavern in East Dubuque Illinois. Police Chief Steve O'Connell says he's bound-and-determined to find Kruziki, who's the son of U-S Marshal William Kruziki. The victim and a co-worker checked into a hotel across the river in Dubuque Iowa. And when Kruziki was last seen, a police officer had just told him to go back to his hotel following a dispute in the tavern. Authorities said he apparently tried to walk across the icy river and fell in. The elder Kruziki says he'll help with the search this weekend, and he'll bring along search equipment like under-water cameras.

Missouri Morning Summary

(St. Louis) Police in St. Louis say a teenager was killed Thursday afternoon and a bystander was wounded. The teen was shot and possibly stabbed outside a barbecue restaurant. The man who came to help him was also shot. The attacker then ran away.
--

(Jefferson City) Two groups that advocate a tax on packs of cigarettes have agreed to support a single ballot initiative. One group had wanted the funding to go toward low-income patients, while the other wanted the money from the tax to go toward medical professionals. Under the compromise plan, the Alliance for Health and Justice and the Committee for a Healthy Future have agreed that about 150-million dollars of the tax money would go toward low-income patients, while another 50-million would go to smoking prevention. The rest would go toward doctors, hospitals, and ambulances. The agreement means the groups will be working on only one ballot initiative for the fall ballot.

--

(Lamar) The city of Lamar wants to stop electrical service to the city's largest employer for non-payment. An attorney for the city filed a motion Monday in federal bankruptcy court in Atlanta. Ready-to-assemble furniture maker O'Sullivan Industries owes the city more than 272-thousand dollars for electrical service through last September. Officials say the company gave the city a 166-thousand-dollar check in October, but the check was returned with a "payment stopped" notation. If the city's request to cut off service is denied, it wants O'Sullivan to pay at least 374-thousand-dollars. A hearing on Lamar's request is scheduled for next month.

(Parkville) Classes were canceled Thursday at Park University in Parkville after a man made an apparent bomb threat. The man was taken into custody and his vehicle was searched, but officials did not find explosives. The vehicle had been parked in the president's parking space. The man had apparently asked to see the president and said something about testing campus security. Daytime and evening classes at the Parkville campus were canceled, but evening classes were still held at the Independence campus. Classes are expected to resume as normal today.
--

(Joplin) Officials in Joplin are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found after an apartment fire. Officials believe 47-year-old Vicki Aston lived alone in the apartment where she was found dead Wednesday morning. The fire had not spread to other apartments in her building. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Here are the details:
The new coach of the Green Bay Packers insists the team will not have to re-build. Mike McCarthy signed a three-year, six-million-dollar contract yesterday to replace the fired Mike Sherman on the Packer sidelines. At 42, McCarthy is now the N-F-L's youngest coach. He spent the last year as the offensive coordinator in San Francisco -- a team that had the same 4-and-12 record as the Packers, with an offense that was last in the N-F-L in yards-per-game, and third-to-last in points scored. But McCarthy said he was stepping into a much better situation at Lambeau. He said the Packers have a solid foundation with an outstanding personnel department, and resources that are second-to-none. McCarthy has been a college-and-pro assistant for almost two decades, and was the quarterbacks' coach in Green Bay in 1999. He says he'll do all he can to convince Brett Favre to return for his 15th season with the Pack. Favre has not said anything about McCarthy's hiring, but his brother Scott in Mississippi says the Packers will have to reach out and do quite a sales job to get him to come back. Also, Packers' defensive coordinator Jim Bates is said to be weighing his options. General manager Ted Thompson says Bates is clearly disappointed he didn't get the head coaching job -- and we'll just have to see what happens.
Team president Bob Harlan said Thompson was looking for a coach who could bring stability to the Packers for the next 5-to-10 years. And of the seven N-F-L assistants he interviewed, Thompson said McCarthy was clearly the best fit. Harlan said McCarthy -- a Pittsburgh native -- is a genuine, blue-collar man who could fit in well if fans would give him a chance. But many aren't -- not yet, anyway. Web-logs were filled with fans slamming Thompson and his selection. And a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on-line poll says 58-percent of the 30-thousand-plus voting don't like the move.

Mike McCarthy may not be the only ex-Packer assistant returning to Green Bay. Media reports say the new coach is trying to get West Allis native Jeff Jagodzinski as his offensive coordinator. He was an assistant in Green Bay from 1999-to-2003, but former coach Mike Sherman fired Jagodzinski over an apparent personality conflict. He was the tight ends coach at the time, and the reports said he often butted heads with Sherman and his offensive coordinator Tom Rossley over game-planning. McCarthy has indicated that he'll most likely call the Packers' offensive plays next season, while Jagodzinski may be called upon to developing the schemes. The Atlanta Falcons snapped up Jagodzinski as soon as Sherman let him go, and he's been Jim Mora's offensive line coach. McCarthy would also like to keep defensive coordinator Jim Bates on board, but that's not certain.

A man from Phoenix is under arrest for allegedly stealing Brett Favre's identity, and using his credit card account to make over 40 purchases. The Arizona attorney general says 35-year-old William Joachim faces felony charges of theft, aggravated identity theft, fraud, and misconduct involving weapons. Two other men have also been arrested, and are in jail awaiting the filing of felony charges. The N-F-L told Arizona authorities last month that the Packers' quarterback had his credit card account broken into. The unauthorized transactions turned up in Maricopa County, where Phoenix is located. Authorities said the purchases totaled over 10-thousand dollars.

Brian Calhoun says he loves playing in Madison, but it's time to move on. The All-American running back surprised no one yesterday when he said he would forego his senior year at Wisconsin, and join the N-F-L Draft in April. Calhoun, a native of Oak Creek, played two seasons at Colorado before transferring to Madison a year ago. He accounted for 43-percent of the Badgers' offense this past season, and became only the second player in N-C-A-A Division-One history to amass both 15-hundred rushing yards and five-hundred receiving yards in the same year. Calhoun said he finalized his decision after the Badgers upset Auburn to win the Capital One Bowl 11 days ago. Calhoun ran for 213 yards and a touchdown. He was the game's M-V-P, and the Badgers gave outgoing coach Barry Alvarez a big win in his final contest. Some stellar running backs are expected to be drafted ahead of Calhoun -- like U-S-C's Reggie Bush, who also said yesterday he was turning pro. But Calhoun expects to be picked somewhere in the first two rounds.
-1/13-
The Milwaukee Bucks will play the Bobcats in Charlotte tonight without guard Mo Williams. He has missed the last two games with a left foot injury he's said to have been nursing for some time. Williams is not sure when it happened, and he has no idea when he'll be able to return. Coach Terry Stotts says Williams is taking medication, and it should not be too long before he's able to come back. He often provides a spark off the bench -- something the Bucks could have used Wednesday night when they lost by 24 points at Indiana. The Pacers shot 56-percent on the night, and Stotts partially blamed a lack of effort. The Bucks have lost six of their last nine, but they're still 18-and-15. The second-year Bobcats are 11-and-24, and they've suffered a good share of injuries while losing five-of-their-last-six.
-1/13-
The Wisconsin women's basketball team blew a 10-point lead with seven minutes left, and lost at home to ninth-ranked Michigan State last night 69-to-63. The Badgers -- who only had eight healthy players -- missed six-of-their-last nine shots, including three straight in the final 30 seconds to try and tie the game from three down. Coach Lisa Stone said her Badgers played tenaciously, and well enough to deserve the upset. Ashley Josephson led Wisconsin in scoring with 15, all on three-pointers. Jolene Anderson had 14 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds for the Badgers, who dropped to 6-and-10 overall and 1-and-4 in Big Ten play. Liz Shimek had 18 points for the Spartans, who improved to 3-and-1 in the league and 13-and-4 overall. Wisconsin hosts Illinois on Sunday.
-1/13-
U-W Green Bay women's coach Kevin Borseth earned his 400th career win last night, as the Phoenix beat Cleveland State on the road 66-to-51. G-B remains un-beaten in the Horizon League at 4-and-0, and is 11-and-3 overall. Borseth is now 400-and-151 in his 19-year career. That puts him in the Top-20 among Division-One coaches with a .726 winning percentage. Borseth is also among the Top-40 active coaches in total victories. Against the Vikings, his Phoenix pulled away in the first half, when they made eight three-pointers. They made 11 for the game, while making a team-record 36 attempts from beyond the arc. Nicole Soulis scored 21 for Green Bay. Dominique Butler had 15 for Cleveland State, which dropped to 1-and-3 in the conference and 3-and-12 overall. The Phoenix are at Youngstown State tomorrow.
-1/13-
The U-W Milwaukee women escaped with a 64-to-59 win at Youngstown State last night. The Penguins got to within two in the final minute, when Traci Edwards made a three-point play to seal the victory for the Panthers. She had 21 points and 13 rebounds for U-W-M, which improved to 3-and-1 in the Horizon League and 7-and-7 overall. Kristy Gaudiose scored 14 for Youngstown State, which is still winless in four conference games. They dropped to 4-and-11 overall. Milwaukee plays at Cleveland State tomorrow. In men's college play tonight, U-W Parkside will host Northland Baptist.
-1/13-
Milwaukee Brewers' reliever Matt Wise avoided salary arbitration yesterday, by signing a two-year contract worth one-point-seven million dollars. The 30-year-old Wise went 4-and-4 last season with a three-point-three-six E-R-A as a set-up man. He held opponents to a .160 batting average, the second-lowest mark in the big leagues. Wise has had injury problems in the past -- and he had Tommy John surgery to repair his throwing elbow before he joined the Brewers in 2004. His signing leaves two Brewers eligible for salary arbitration -- outfielder Brady Clark and right-handed starter Tomo Ohka. Also, the Brewers said they would invite minor league left-hander Mitch Stetter to spring training.
-1/13-
Jerry Kelly of Madison is tied for 13th after the first round of the P-G-A's Sony Open in Hawaii. Kelly shot a two-under-par 68 yesterday. Winds of up to 35-miles-an-hour challenged the players -- and they especially caused problems for Michelle Wie. The 16-year-old turned pro last year, and she struggled to a seven-over-par 79. That puts her in second-to-last place, 14 strokes behind the leader, Rory Sabbatini.
-1/13-
The Wisconsin men's hockey team will play its first games in two weeks tonight and tomorrow night at Colorado College. The top-ranked Badgers are 7-0-and-1 on the road -- the second-longest road un-beaten streak in school history at the start of a season. Coach Mike Eaves says the key is to get off to a solid start. The Badgers have only trailed twice when they played at Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Saint Cloud State. Of a possible 485 minutes in those games, they were only behind for just over 47 of those minutes. Senior right-winger Ryan MacMurchy says it also helps to have a veteran team who knows the rigors of the road. He says it takes a lot of will to get the job done. Also, the Wisconsin women's hockey team will play its first W-C-H-A games in more than a month tonight and tomorrow night at North Dakota. The Badgers are 12-1-and-1 in conference play, while the Fighting Sioux is having a rough season at 1-11-and-2. The Badgers are 2-and-0 against North Dakota this season. In one of those contests, they shut out the Sioux 8-nothing.
-1/13-
For the second straight weekend, the Milwaukee Admirals are playing three games in three days -- with a road game sandwiched in between a pair of home contests. Tonight, the Admirals will host the Cleveland Barons. They've beaten Milwaukee two-out-of-three times this season, with the latest win coming a week ago at Cleveland. The Admirals will also play at Grand Rapids tomorrow night, and against the Toronto Marlies at the Bradley Center on Sunday afternoon. All told, Milwaukee is playing five games in the next seven days.
-1/13-
The Milwaukee Wave will host Saint Louis tonight in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The Wave are 9-and-1, while the Steamers come in at 8-and-3. Saint Louis will play without coach Omid Namazi, who has served one game of a six-game suspension for having improper contact with a official last Saturday against Philadelphia. On December third, Milwaukee edged out the Steamers 6-to-5 in overtime.

Wal-Mart will make GARTH BROOKS' newest CD, The Lost Sessions, individually available February 7 with six additional previously recorded unreleased tracks. The six new tracks include a duet, Love Will Always Win, with new wife TRISHA YEARWOOD. The original Lost Sessions CD is included in Garth's The Limited Series boxed set, which has been available at Wal-Mart since November. The update Lost Sessions disc features
17 total tracks, including Garth's recent number one song, Good Ride Cowboy.

MARTINA MCBRIDE kicks off her Timeless tour tonight (Fri) in State College, Pennsylvania. The 37-city tour is expected to showcase a two-hour show that'll include Martina's hits as well as many of the tunes from her latest CD, Timeless, which has sold over 1 million copies.

MARTINA MCBRIDE will appear on Sunday's (1/15) episode of The Food Network's Emeril Live (8p ET).

Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Sat) for this year's Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo concerts, which begin February 25 and run through March 19.
Artists performing at the event include GEORGE STRAIT, ALAN JACKSON, GRETCHEN WILSON, TOBY KEITH, LEE ANN WOMACK and CLAY WALKER among others. Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets.

It's a big week for CARRIE UNDERWOOD. Not only does her Some Hearts CD hold the top spot on the Billboard Country Albums chart for a seventh straight week, but her single Jesus Take The Wheel has taken over the top spot on the Billboard Country Singles Chart for the week ending January 21, knocking out GEORGE STRAIT. By the way, Carrie is the first female country artist of 2006 to top the Billboard Country Singles Chart. In 2005 it wasn't until May that a female artist, JO DEE MESSINA, hit number one.

CARRIE UNDERWOOD appears on the cover of the first-ever Prom issue of Cosmo Girl Magazine, on newsstands now. The photos taken in the segment dedicated to Carrie were shot last summer in Wisconsin while she was on a break from the American Idol tour. The issue will remain on newsstands through May.

HANK WILLIAMS JR. made a trip to Morgantown, West Virginia Tuesday, (1/10) to visit the family of Randal McCloy Jr., the lone survivor in the Sago mining tragedy. Hank learned that one of Randal's family members used his music to try and reach the young man who has been in a coma for several days following the incident where 12 miners were killed by an explosion. Randal is in critical but stable condition at a West Virginia hospital.

TRISHA YEARWOOD has scored several hits on the charts, but her big hit in the kitchen is her mashed potatoes. GARTH BROOKS and his three daughters love Trisha's potatoes and ask her to make them often. When she does, not only do they get the treat of a tasty side dish, but she often sings while cooking.

CLAY WALKER was honored Tuesday (1/10) with a star on the Ford Exhibit Hall Walk of Fame in Beaumont, Texas. After the event, he performed a thank you concert for Southeast Texas First Responders in gratitude for their help with recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.

LEANN RIMES, KENNY ROGER, TRISHA YEARWOOD, VINCE GILL and GEORGE JONES will be among the country artists taking part in the Sound & Speed event, kicking off today (Fri) and running through tomorrow (Sat) at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. The event pairs some of the top stars of country with some of the top stars from NASCAR such as Kyle Petty, Michael Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

CYNDI THOMSON (What I Really Meant To Say), who quit the music business in 2002, has returned to Capitol Nashville and will begin recording a new album late next month. After topping the charts with What I Really Meant To Say in 2001, and scoring a gold album with her debut, My World, Cyndi decided in 2002 her heart wasn't in the music business and she needed to step away. Now she's back and hoping to re-claim her spot at the top of the charts.

Billboard Top Five Singles

1) CARRIE UNDERWOOD - Jesus Take The Wheel
2) GEORGE STRAIT - She Let Herself Go
3) BILLY CURRINGTON - Must Be Doin' Something' Right
4) TRACE ADKINS - Honky Tonk Badonkadonk

Human Interest

An elderly Washington woman who was trapped in her car for six days kept herself alive by drinking condensation from her windshield. Eighty-eight-year-old Mary Lillian Anderson drove off a road on her way home from the grocery store last week. She was unable to get out of the car, so she sustained herself by wiping condensation off the windshield and sucking it out of the towel. She was unable to reach the groceries because they were in the truck. She was found after a delivery truck driver saw the car stuck in some bushes.

A Michigan man is in jail after three people became ill after shaking hands with him. Officials say John Ridgeway put a substance on his hands and insisted on shaking hands with a prosecutor, a police officer, and a courtroom bailiff. All three became ill within an hour and two of them went to the hospital. Ridgeway says what he put on his hands was just olive oil.

--

A Houston firefighter has proven she is as tough as any other. Beda Kent took a promotion test 12 hours after giving birth to a baby girl. Kent says if she had not taken to test Wednesday morning, she would have had to wait about two years for the next promotion test opportunity. Officials say everyone has to take the test at the same time or some people would be given an unfair advantage. Even a firefighter wounded in the line of duty would have had to wait until the next opportunity.

A new study of British youth shows that more than one in ten would quit school to become a star. About nine percent of the children surveyed by the Learning and Skills Council said they though fame was a good way to make money without any need for skills or qualifications.

--

Scientists in South Africa say humans used to be bird food. A researcher at a Johannesburg university studied a two-million-year-old skull and found characteristic damage around the eyes that showed the child had apparently been eaten by an eagle.
